Helen Rivas, grandmother of two students at Kocurek Elementary, loves Academy 4 Fridays and its positive impact on her granddaughters.
All our 4th grade students and families benefit from Academy 4. Our wonderful mentors express care to 4th graders and help shape them into leaders at this pivotal time in their lives. “I love that they get their own mentor to encourage them. You can never have enough positive adults pouring into a child.” Ms. Rivas said.
Our 4th graders are learning and expanding their horizons through our Spark Clubs giving them more opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities. From robotics to cooking to guitar and sewing these 4th graders apply creativity and learn and grow in fun ways. Ms. Riva explains, "It gives the students something to look forward to each month which motivates them and is important for the kids." Her oldest granddaughter made a pillow in sewing club, "It gave her a sense of accomplishment and pride." Spark Clubs invite 4th graders to dream big and spark interest in things they might not otherwise get to experience.
Ms. Riva’s oldest granddaughter loved spending time with her mentor in Academy 4 this last year, and now her younger granddaughter is looking forward to Academy 4 Fridays and spending time with her own mentor! The Rivas family's story underscores the importance of positive caring, adults coming alongside families in our communities to encourage children.
